Unfortunately, this has resulted in the spread of Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and instances of biopiracy, resulting in the exploitation of genetic resources and their products through practices such as illegal use and patenting. Consequently, this misuse has hindered both the country and local communities from fully benefiting from the access of their genetic resources.<\/p><p>Ethiopia has introduced national laws governing access to genetic material and the sharing of benefits thereof. However, effectively controlling the flow of the country\u2019s genetic wealth in multiple directions requires a concerted effort and shared responsibility. This is essential for the benefit of Ethiopia and the local communities that have diligently conserved these resources for generations.<\/p><p>In addition to adhering to the legal procedures outlined above, researchers should be aware that it is their responsibility to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations when transferring genetic materials. It remains crucial to conduct research ethically and in accordance with the existing national and international laws and best practices. Genetic Material Export Permit<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c175e6f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c175e6f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9aadb7a\" data-id=\"9aadb7a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6752307 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6752307\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI) is mandated to give access permit for those who need to export genetic materials abroad for research purposes. Ethiopian researchers planning to do their researches abroad on genetic material (s) from Ethiopia must obtain permits from EBI before transferring the genetic material to another country.<\/p><p>To facilitate the process there are certain requirements that the permit applicant needs to fulfill. These are:<\/p><ol><li>Genetic Material Export Application letter,<\/li><li>Material Transfer Agreement (MTA),<\/li><li>Letter of Assurance,<\/li><li>Research Proposal.<\/li><\/ol><p><strong>2.1<\/strong> <strong>Official Application Letter: <\/strong>The permit applicant must bring an official letter from his\/her home organization (Employer). In the official letter, the following must be clearly indicated as appropriate:<\/p><ul><li>The person responsible for the research,<\/li><li>Local and scientific name of the species that needs to be taken abroad,<\/li><li>Amount of sample in grams\/kilograms\/packs\/Liter, etc.,<\/li><li>Total number of accessions\/samples,<\/li><li>The destination Institute\/Laboratory\/University and country, and<\/li><li>Purpose\/objective of the research.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Note<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">: If the samples are collected by the researcher from various regions of the country, the passport data of the samples needs to be attached with the official request letter.<\/span><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">2.2<\/strong> <strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Research Proposal<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">: The applicant must submit a revised and authenticated copy of his\/her Research proposal (not more than 15 pages) \u2013 with brief introduction, objective\/s, clear methodology, expected outcomes and the benefit of the research to Ethiopia.<\/span><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">2.3<\/strong> <strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Material Transfer Agreement (MTA):<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"> Five (5) copies of MTA signed and stamped by the Employer (Host Institution in Ethiopia) and the researcher need to be produced along with the official application letter for faster facilitation process.<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/ebi.gov.et\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Material-Export-Agreement-Sample.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Download Sample Material Transfer Agreement here.]<\/a><\/p><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Although the general structure of the MTA is similar, the specific contents vary depending on the research objective, expected outcome, number of samples, destination country, etc. Make sure that on the page that bears the seal of your Employer\/Institution, there must not be any error\/s.<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">2.4<\/strong> <strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">Letter of Assurance:<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\"> Official letter must be brought from institutions abroad where the genetic material will be transferred to. These are:<\/p><ol><li>Genetic Material Import Application Letter,<\/li><li>Research Proposal,<\/li><li>Passport data and\/or pedigree of samples,<\/li><li>Material Transfer Agreement (MTA),<\/li><li>GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) and Invasive Alien Species (IAS) free Certificate\/official letter,<\/li><\/ol><p><strong>3.1 Official Import Application letter: <\/strong>Letter from the import requesting organization is required.
