Studies to identify the threats of invasive plants in Ethiopia have been limited in scope, less insightful, and not sufficiently coordinated. Insufficient resources played major role in this respect. Thus, activities were focusing on problems associated with agriculture and human activity whereas, their threats to the natural ecosystems left aside.
Ethiopia has recognized the urgent need to address the problems of invasive alien plants, and have teamed up with CABI Africa and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) to implement a Regional Project entitled “Removing Barriers to Invasive plant Management in Africa” involving three other pilot countries: Ghana, Uganda and Zambia. The PDF-A & B phases of the aforementioned “Project” have been successfully implemented and four-year Full Project is now formally approved and jointly funded by the Ethiopian Government and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
